The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has decided to remain neutral in the upcoming Vice-Presidential election, opting not to back either the NDA or the INDIA bloc. Party working president K.T. Rama Rao is expected to announce the decision officially, citing that both alliances have been unjust to Telangana, particularly in addressing the state’s pressing demand for 2 lakh tonnes of urea.
With no NOTA option available, BRS MPs will likely stay away from voting. The party currently holds four Rajya Sabha seats — Vaddiraju Ravichandra, Suresh Reddy, B.B. Damodar Rao, and Partha Sarathi Reddy — but has no Lok Sabha representation following the 2024 general elections.
The Vice-Presidential contest will see the NDA fielding senior leader C.P. Radhakrishnan, while the INDIA bloc has nominated former Supreme Court judge Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy. In terms of numbers, the NDA holds 293 seats in the Lok Sabha and 132 in the Rajya Sabha, while the INDIA alliance controls 234 Lok Sabha seats and 77 in the Rajya Sabha, giving the ruling coalition a clear numerical edge.
BRS’s decision to abstain underscores its growing distance from both national formations, keeping the party firmly in a neutral stance ahead of the crucial poll.
