YSR Congress Party: 16 years of an uncompromised Journey

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), founded on March 12, 2011, marks its 16th anniversary today. Over the past decade and a half, the party has emerged as one of the most significant political movements in the history of Andhra Pradesh. Rooted in the ideals of social justice, welfare-driven governance, and inclusive development, YSRCP has evolved into a powerful voice representing the aspirations of the people.

More than just a political organization, the party reflects the trust and affection of the people, especially the poor, farmers, Dalits, minorities, and marginalized sections. Guided by the leadership of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, YSRCP has consistently worked toward building a welfare-oriented governance model while striving for the development of Andhra Pradesh.

Origins: A Political Movement born from Historical necessity

The formation of the YSR Congress Party emerged from a defining moment in Andhra Pradesh’s political history.

On September 2, 2009, the sudden demise of the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and people’s leader Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR) created a political vacuum and deep emotional turmoil across the state.

Following YSR’s death, his son YS Jagan Mohan Reddy faced political hostility and humiliation within the Indian National Congress despite the overwhelming support he enjoyed among the people and party cadre.

In April 2010, YS Jagan embarked on the historic Odarpu Yatra, a journey across the state to console families who reportedly died of shock after YSR’s demise. Despite strong opposition from the Congress leadership, Jagan continued the tour, strengthening his bond with the people.

Eventually, in November 2010, YS Jagan resigned from the Congress Party and later founded the YSR Congress Party on March 12, 2011, marking the beginning of a new political era in Andhra Pradesh.

YSRCP believes that democratic opposition is not merely criticism, but constructive engagement and protection of public institutions.
