Kamal Haasan Fires Back: ‘No Regrets, No Release

A cinematic storm has erupted around the much-anticipated film Thug Life, as legendary actor Kamal Haasan finds himself at the center of a linguistic and cultural controversy. Directed by Mani Ratnam, the pan-India film stars Haasan alongside Tamil star Simbu and Kannada icon Shivarajkumar—a collaboration meant to celebrate regional unity. But unity gave way to uproar.

During a pre-release event in Chennai, Kamal Haasan stirred the hornet’s nest by stating that “Kannada language originated from Tamil.” Intended as a nod to shared heritage, the remark was taken by many in Karnataka as an insult to their language and cultural identity. Protests erupted swiftly. Kannada organizations demanded an apology, tearing down film posters and threatening to torch theatres if Thug Life is screened in the state.

The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) issued a deadline: apologize by May 30, 2025, or face a state-wide ban. Even the Karnataka High Court stepped in, questioning Kamal’s historical accuracy and suggesting an apology could resolve the dispute.

But Kamal Haasan is holding his ground. “I have done nothing wrong,” he said. “There’s no question of an apology.” He added that the film will not release in Karnataka, a bold declaration that’s both a stand for free speech and a move that could cost the film commercially.

Haasan has also approached the Karnataka High Court, challenging the ban and defending his freedom of expression.

What was meant to be a celebration of pan-South Indian talent has now become a flashpoint for regional pride. Whether this cinematic clash will cool down or intensify further remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Thug Life now carries more drama off-screen than on.
