A single meeting of prominent Kapu community leaders has triggered a political storm within the TDP-Jana Sena alliance. The gathering, held recently at Venkatayapalem in Kakinada district, focused on issues affecting the Kapu community, including unfulfilled promises, growing dissatisfaction, and recent incidents such as the Sai Krishna custodial death and Kranthi Kumar’s suicide. The discussion appears to have unsettled the ruling coalition, prompting what YSRCP describes as a series of diversionary political moves aimed at shifting public attention.
Fear of losing the Kapu Vote Bank
According to YSRCP, the June 21 meeting reflected growing discontent among Kapu leaders over the coalition government’s failure to honour commitments made to the community. The concern that this dissatisfaction could weaken the coalition’s Kapu support base is said to have triggered a series of political countermeasures by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan.
Sudden Public Meetings by Pawan Kalyan
Soon after the Kapu meeting, Pawan Kalyan conducted back-to-back public meetings in Rajamahendravaram and Kakinada without any prior schedule. Instead of addressing the issues raised by the Kapu community, he focused his speeches on attacking YSRCP leaders, issuing warnings, and attempting to rally Jana Sena cadre. YSRCP views these meetings as an effort to divert attention from the growing concerns within the Kapu community.
Changing the Narrative
When those meetings failed to shift public discourse, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu introduced a fresh political narrative by claiming that Pawan Kalyan’s family members were being abused. YSRCP says this issue was raised without presenting any evidence and was intended to create hostility between Jana Sena and YSRCP while pushing the Kapu issues into the background. The party repeatedly sought proof for these claims but says none was produced.
The Ravana Episode
The arrest of YouTuber Ravana subsequently became another major political issue. YSRCP says Ravana, an independent political commentator who had interviewed leaders from various political parties, was suddenly portrayed as a YSRCP supporter. Jana Sena activists were mobilised against him, and multiple criminal cases were filed, creating another controversy that dominated public discussion. YSRCP questions why action was taken only now if his videos had been objectionable for a long time.
Diversion from Key Issues
YSRCP maintains that these successive controversies were designed to divert attention from the deaths of Sai Krishna and Kranthi Kumar, as well as from the growing resentment among the Kapu community. The party says every attempt was made to replace discussions on governance failures and community grievances with emotionally charged political controversies.
What About the Promises to Kapus?
YSRCP says the real issue remains unanswered: What happened to the promises made to the Kapu community? It argues that if dissatisfaction within the community continues to grow, the government will be compelled to answer questions about the implementation of its promises, including welfare commitments such as Kapu Nestham and greater political representation for Jana Sena leaders. Merely giving a constitutional post to Pawan Kalyan, YSRCP says, cannot be portrayed as justice for the entire
Kapu community.
According to YSRCP, the recent sequence of events reflects a deliberate political strategy to manufacture conflict, inflame emotions, and shift attention away from the coalition government’s unfulfilled commitments to the Kapu community. The party says Kapu leaders are closely watching these developments and remain determined to expose what they describe as Chandrababu Naidu’s diversionary politics at the appropriate time.
