Tragedy in Rajahmundry: Pharmacy Student Naga Anjali Dies by Suicide After Alleged Harassment

A tragic incident has shaken the city of Rajahmundry and sparked statewide outrage after Nallapu Naga Anjali, a 23-year-old PharmD final year student at Vikas Pharmacy College, succumbed to injuries sustained during a suicide attempt. Anjali, who had been undergoing her internship at KIMS Bollineni Hospital, passed away on April 4, 2025, 12 days after allegedly administering a high dose of anaesthesia to herself inside the hospital.

Before her death, Anjali reportedly left behind a suicide note in which she accused Deepak, an Assistant General Manager (AGM) at KIMS Hospital, of persistent sexual harassment. The letter detailed how she had been mentally and emotionally distressed due to his actions. Her suicide attempt occurred on March 23, 2025, and she was immediately moved to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Despite continuous medical attention, she could not be saved.

Deepak, held a senior administrative role at KIMS Hospital and said to have potential political links with leaders of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).This has further fuelled public anger, with many demanding transparency in the investigation

Anjali’s parentshave expressed deep grief and called for the strictest punishment against the accused. Women’s rights organizations, student unions, and civil society groups have staged protests demanding accountability and improved mechanisms for women’s safety in educational and medical institutionswhich includes mandatory Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs), regular audits, and psychological support systems for students.

As of now, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan who once said, “If you lay a hand on girls, I’ll break it off” didn’t even bother to comment on this issue. Lady Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha too have not issued any official statements or visited the family of Naga Anjali.

Their silence on the matter by alliance government has drawn criticism from various quarters, including women’s rights organizations, student unions, and political opponents, who have questioned the government’s commitment to ensuring justice and safety for women.
