The move stems from the DMK-MNM alliance during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which MNM supported the INDIA bloc led by the DMK across all 40 constituencies in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. In return, DMK agreed to allocate one Rajya Sabha seat to MNM — a deal finalized between DMK chief M.K. Stalin and Kamal Haasan at the DMK headquarters in Chennai.

With a commanding 134 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, DMK is expected to secure 4 out of 6 Rajya Sabha seats in the upcoming June 19, 2025 elections.
