Actor to Parliamentarian: Kamal Haasan’s National Political Debut

రాజ్యసభకు కమల్‌.. మక్కల్ నీది మయ్యంతో డీఎంకే డీల్‌

In a significant political development, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has officially announced that actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan will be nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2025, fulfilling a pre-election alliance pact with his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM).

Alliance Cemented During 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

The move stems from the DMK-MNM alliance during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which MNM supported the INDIA bloc led by the DMK across all 40 constituencies in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. In return, DMK agreed to allocate one Rajya Sabha seat to MNM — a deal finalized between DMK chief M.K. Stalin and Kamal Haasan at the DMK headquarters in Chennai.

Political Significance and Strategy

With a commanding 134 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, DMK is expected to secure 4 out of 6 Rajya Sabha seats in the upcoming June 19, 2025 elections. Nominating Kamal Haasan is seen as a strategic move, bolstering DMK’s alliance base while bringing a high-profile national figure into the INDIA bloc’s voice in Parliament.

Kamal Haasan’s Political Milestone

Since founding MNM in 2018, Kamal Haasan has struggled electorally — notably losing the 2021 Assembly race in Coimbatore South. His Rajya Sabha nomination marks MNM’s first formal entry into Parliament, giving him a platform to influence national debates and potentially enhance his political role ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Role in Delhi Politics

As a Rajya Sabha MP, Kamal Haasan is expected to take on issues related to federalism, secularism, social justice, and Tamil identity. He may also contribute significantly through parliamentary committees focused on cinema, culture, youth, and education.
