A tragic bridge collapse over the Indrayani River near Kundmala in Talegaon of Pune on Sunday, June 16, 2025, claimed four lives, including that of a five-year-old child, and left 51 injured, with eight in critical condition. Two individuals reported missing were later found during rescue operations.
Around 125–150 people, including tourists and locals, had gathered on the 32-year-old footbridge to enjoy the monsoon scenery. Despite the bridge being declared unsafe years ago—with warning signs and barricades in place—many ignored restrictions. Some even brought two-wheelers onto the structure. Overcrowding and structural rust caused the bridge to give way.
Rescue teams, including NDRF, police, fire services, and volunteers, launched swift operations, rescuing over 50 people within hours. The effort lasted nearly 15 hours and was largely deemed effective.
Government officials, including CM Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, announced ₹5 lakh ex gratia for victims’ families and full medical coverage for the injured. A structural audit of all bridges has been ordered, and tenders for reconstruction are being expedited.
