Fare Hike on the Cards for Hyderabad Metro Commuters

Hyderabad Metro Rail, operated by L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Ltd, is reportedly planning a fare hike of approximately 20% in the second week of May. This move comes as the metro service continues to face substantial financial losses, totalling around ₹6,500 crore since its inception.

Launched in November 2017, Hyderabad Metro has been widely appreciated for providing a smooth, traffic-free, pollution-less, and time-saving commuting experience to the people of the city. It currently stands as one of the largest public transport systems in the country, with a daily ridership of over 4 lakh passengers.

However, to cope with the heavy losses, metro authorities are now targeting an annual revenue of ₹150 crore, and fare revision is seen as a necessary step toward achieving that goal. According to inside sources, the minimum ticket fare is likely to rise from ₹10 to ₹15, while the maximum fare may go up from ₹60 to ₹75.

While discussions are still underway and the final decision awaits the Chief Minister’s approval, the proposed hike is already drawing attention. Officials are treading cautiously, especially after the recent 44% fare increase in Bengaluru Metro was met with widespread public backlash.
