Jagan Hails Centre’s Caste Census Decision, Reaffirms Commitment to Backward Communities In a significant political development, YSRCP Chief and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has extended his support to the Modi-led Union Government’s decision to conduct a caste census alongside the upcoming population census. The move, approved by the Union Cabinet yesterday, has sparked reactions across the political spectrum — with Jagan’s endorsement drawing particular attention. What makes this support noteworthy is that the BJP’s decision comes with backing from TDP, a rival party and NDA ally in Andhra Pradesh. Yet, putting political lines aside, Jagan welcomed the move, calling it a progressive step towards social justice. Jagan also reminded the public that the YSRCP government had been a forerunner in this regard. Back in 2021, his government passed a resolution advocating for a caste census in the state. True to that commitment, the process was implemented in 2024 through the state's grassroots administrative system — the village and ward secretariats. The intent, Jagan emphasized, was clear: to ensure effective, data-driven welfare delivery to backward and marginalized communities. While many were surprised by Jagan's open support for a decision spearheaded by a political opponent, YSRCP supporters lauded their leader's statesmanship and commitment to the welfare of weaker sections, beyond party affiliations.
