In one of the deadliest terror strikes in recent times, 30 tourists were killed and dozens injured in a brutal attack by armed militants near Baisaran Meadows, a popular trekking spot close to Pahalgam in Jammu & Kashmir’s Anantnag district, on Tuesday, April 16. The attack has sparked nationwide outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of civilians in the valley ahead of the Amarnath Yatra, set to begin on July 3.Among the deceased were, a resident of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, an Intelligence Bureau officer from Hyderabad, Telangana. Both victims were part of a trekking group and were caught off guard by the sudden burst of gunfire.
The attackers, believed to be affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), ambushed the tourists from close range as they trekked through the scenic route, often referred to as the “Mini Switzerland” of India. The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow group of LeT, has claimed responsibility for the attack via a social media post, further heightening tensions.
Incident Details
According to eyewitnesses, the terrorists, dressed in army fatigues, emerged from nearby wooded areas and began shooting without warning. The attack occurred in an area only accessible by foot or horseback, making immediate escape difficult for the unsuspecting tourists.
Security forces rushed to the site following the gunfire and airlifted the injured to a hospital in Pahalgam. Doctors confirmed that at least 9 people are currently being treated, some with critical injuries, including women and elderly individuals.
Amarnath Yatra Security Concerns
