Guns Fall Silent: Trump Leads Historic India-Pakistan Ceasefire Deal

In a major diplomatic breakthrough, India and Pakistan have agreed to a full ceasefire after a period of heightened tensions along the Line of Control. The agreement was reached following extended discussions mediated by the United States, with former President Donald Trump playing a key role. Trump announced the development via social media, calling the decision a “smart and common-sense move” and applauding both nations for showing restraint and maturity. The talks, supported by the U.S., were conducted overnight and reportedly included several senior officials from both India and Pakistan.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the ceasefire will take effect from 5:00 PM IST on Saturday. Misri stated that the process began with a phone call from Pakistan’s DGMO at 3:15 PM, requesting India to halt military action. In response, India agreed to the ceasefire. Misri also announced that further DGMO-level talks are scheduled for May 12 to reinforce the terms of the ceasefire. Pakistani Minister Ishaq Dar also confirmed the agreement and indicated that it provides a temporary pause to India’s ongoing “Operation Sindoor.”

According to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the negotiations took place in the presence of U.S. Vice President JD Vance, with key Indian figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, and NSA Ajit Doval participating. From Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Army Chief General Asif Munir, and NSA Malik were involved. Rubio highlighted that America’s diplomatic efforts were crucial in bringing both nuclear-armed neighbors to the table. The ceasefire has been widely welcomed and is expected to ease tensions in the region, at least temporarily.
