The Supreme Court has dealt a significant blow to the Telangana government regarding the University of Hyderabad (HCU) land issue. A petition was filed alleging that the government was illegally cutting down trees within the university premises. Taking the matter seriously, the Supreme Court accepted the petition for an urgent hearing and ordered a complete halt to all activities on the disputed land. The court also warned that if its orders were violated, the state’s Chief Secretary would be held personally accountable.
The Telangana government had planned to take possession of 400 acres of HCU land and develop it into commercial layouts for sale. Despite strong opposition from students and political parties like the BRS and BJP, the government proceeded with land leveling using JCBs. However, the Supreme Court intervened after concerns were raised about environmental destruction, issuing strict warnings against further actions.
Expressing its displeasure, the Supreme Court questioned the role of top officials, including the Chief Secretary and GHMC Commissioner, in allowing these activities. With this legal setback, all eyes are now on the court’s next move, as the issue continues to spark widespread debate and protests.
