Surya has struck gold at the box office with his latest film Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj. Released on May 1, 2025, this romantic action drama has become the highest-grossing film of the actor’s career, collecting ₹235 crore worldwide in just 18 days.
In Retro, Surya played the role of a gangster caught between love, loyalty, and revenge. The film features Pooja Hegde as the female lead, with strong performances from Joju George, Jayaram, and Nassar. Santhosh Narayanan’s music and Karthik Subbaraj’s stylish direction gave the film a unique edge.
While it emerged as a blockbuster in Tamil Nadu, the film didn’t meet expectations in the Telugu states. However, its overall performance received praise, even from Superstar Rajinikanth, who congratulated the team.
This success comes as a major comeback for Surya after Kanguva (2024), a high-budget venture that failed to impress despite a strong opening.
