Rainfall Deficit Deepens in Telangana, Kharif Season Under Threat

అప్పటివరకూ తెలంగాణకు వర్షాలు లేనట్టేనా? రైతులు ఆందోళనలో!

The monsoon season has brought little relief to Telangana so far, with the India MeteorologicalDepartment (IMD) confirming below-normal rainfall across the state. The dry conditions areexpected to persist for at least the next 20 days, as IMD forecasts no major rainfall untilmid-August due to unfavorable weather patterns.

No Relief Till Mid-August

According to IMD officials, the key factor behind the rainfall deficit is the absence oflow-pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal — the usual trigger for monsoon activity in theregion. As a result, only scattered light showers may occur in isolated districts, while widespreadrains are unlikely in the near term.

Rising Rainfall Deficit

Telangana recorded a 28% rainfall deficit in June and continues to lag behind in July as well, currently facing a 13% shortfall. This prolonged dry spell is now beginning to show signs ofstress across rural regions of the state.

Farmers Under Pressure

With most of Telangana’s agriculture depending heavily on rainfall rather than irrigation, thecurrent weather conditions have triggered concern among farmers. Crop sowing activities, particularly for the Kharif season, have been significantly delayed. Many farmers remain hesitantto begin sowing, fearing poor germination or total crop failure if the rains continue to elude theregion.

Agricultural experts warn that if rains do not pick up soon, large swathes of rain-fed farmlandmay be left unsown this season, severely affecting rural livelihoods and food production.

Andhra Pradesh Outlook

In contrast, neighboring Andhra Pradesh has seen slightly better monsoon performance so far, especially in coastal areas. However, IMD indicates that even there, rainfall could become patchyin the coming weeks. The forecast suggests no major system-driven rains in Andhra until earlyAugust, mirroring the challenges Telangana faces, though with slightly less intensity.
