Andhra Pradesh IT and Education Minister Nara Lokesh (popularly referred to as “Chinnababu,” son of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu) has been making headlines for his frequent attendance at high-profile Team India cricket matches. Turning these outings into a personal PR campaign while neglecting pressing state issues.
The Cricket Craze and Viral Promotion
Lokesh has been spotted at several marquee games, including India-Pakistan clashes in Colombo and other venues, as well as the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad. Dressed in Team India jerseys, waving the national flag, and posing with celebrities and players, his photos and videos often go viral on social media, amplified by his promotion team.
He has built a narrative suggesting his presence brings luck to the team, claiming that India hasn’t lost any match he has watched live in stadiums as a minister. This has sparked online jokes and comments urging him to quit politics and become a full-time “lucky charm” for Team India.
“My Ticket, My Money” Defense
Responding to allegations of misusing public funds or special flights, Lokesh has repeatedly clarified that he pays for his travel and tickets personally. In posts on X (formerly Twitter), he has stated emphatically: “The flight ticket is mine! The match ticket is mine! I watched the match with my money and did not spend your money.”
RTI documents have also reportedly confirmed that his frequent air travels, including some special flights for official duties, were funded from his personal income, not the state exchequer.
Why not during Opposition days?
Critics question why such enthusiasm, and special arrangements, were absent when TDP was in opposition. They argue that if passion for cricket and supporting Team India was genuine, Lokesh could have attended matches back then without the perks of power. Instead, they claim, his current high-profile appearances only started after TDP returned to government.
State issues vs. Stadium enjoyment
Amid ongoing challenges in Andhra Pradesh, including incidents like adulterated milk deaths in Rajamahendravaram, firecracker explosion aftermath in Vetlapalem, electrocutions at festivals, and temple shed collapses, opponents accuse Lokesh and other coalition leaders of being in “enjoyment mode.” They contrast this with public suffering, suggesting ministers should prioritize governance over global cricket tours.
Party’s mixed reactions
Even some within TDP circles appear uneasy about the “promotion madness,” with reports of leaders feeling embarrassed by the over-the-top cricket focus. Comparisons have been drawn to carefree movie characters, implying Lokesh seems disconnected from his ministerial responsibilities.
While Lokesh’s cricket passion reflects many fans’ dreams of watching India live, the political slugfest highlights deeper tensions: Is it harmless fandom, patriotic support, or calculated self-promotion at taxpayers’ expense? The debate continues to rage in Andhra Pradesh’s charged political landscape.
