Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, callinghim a “good friend” and expressing eagerness to resume talks. Trump said he looks forward toboosting India–U.S. cooperation on trade.
Responding on X, PM Modi welcomed the message, reaffirming India’s “close friendship andnatural partnership” with the U.S. He said both sides’ teams are already working to concludetalks quickly and deliver benefits to people of both nations.
Relations between the two leaders were cordial during Trump’s early presidency but laterstrained over trade tariffs. Trump had imposed a 25% tariff on India, followed by another 25%citing India’s oil trade with Russia, raising the total to 50%—among the highest on any country.Modi at the time maintained that India was prepared to bear tariffs if it ultimately benefitedIndian farmers.
The latest exchange signals a possible effort to reset ties, with both leaders showing readiness fordialogue.
