The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering appointing MS Dhoni as a long-term mentor for the national side, looking to tap into his tactical acumen and leadership experience ahead of future ICC tournaments.
Dhoni, who led India to three ICC titles—the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy—continues to play in the IPL, guiding Chennai Super Kings to five championships. He briefly served as India’s mentor during the 2021 T20 World Cup, but that role was limited to the tournament alone.
With Gautam Gambhir now the head coach, there is curiosity about how a Gambhir-Dhoni partnership might function, given past debates over World Cup credits. Yet recent public appearances together suggest cordiality.
For the BCCI, Dhoni’s ability to groom players under pressure makes him a valuable asset. The final decision, however, rests on Dhoni himself—whether he accepts a formal long-term role in shaping India’s next phase.
